The filter must be large enough to pass the pool's full turnover flow without exceeding its maximum design flux. Residential standards: sand filters up to 15 GPM/sq ft, DE up to 2 GPM/sq ft, cartridges up to 0.375 GPM/sq ft.
Mode A (Size a Filter): enter pool volume and desired turnover time. The calculator outputs the required GPM and the minimum filter area for each media type — helpful when buying new equipment.
Mode B (Check My Filter): enter your filter type and media area to see its max flow and whether it can turn over your pool in a reasonable time. Undersized filters force longer run times or push water through too fast, hurting filtration.
